Melvin is an avid reader and a recently retired scientist (chemist) after working for one major pharmaceutical company for 32 years. He has worked a total of 35 years as a chemist at several major laboratories. His original ambition was to become a Medical Illustrator (an artist with MD behind his name) but his ambition was changed while working during his high school years as a lab assistant to an anatomy professor.  Her fiance was a chemical engineer who influenced him to study chemistry.

He enjoys reading articles on any field of science, especially the science of genetics, medicine and astronomy.  He mostly reads scientific journals and magazines such as Scientific American, Discover, National Geographic, and Smithsonian just to name a few.

His goal on hubpages is to share his scientific knowledge with other hubbers and readers in a non-scientific perspective. Occasionally, he will write a few hubs on other topics besides science primarily to earn money, after all, that is what writing on Hubpages is all about.

His other interests are math,  R&B music, jazz music and history; especially nineteenth century and twentieth century history. His favorite area of interest in history is just about anything pertaining to scientific discoveriesAmerican Civil War and World War II.  He believes you will have a better understanding of the current world events if you know your history. All current events supersede past events.

He is also an amateur artist and his work was once critiqued while he was a teen by the late, well-known American, artist Norman Rockwell. In his free time he creates pencil drawings and has been doing this since the age of six.

He also enjoys cruising in the Caribbean during the summer with his family. Cruising is his favorite way of vacationing and on his own time he enjoys watching lots of science fiction movies, namely, The Matrix, The Time Machine, Star Wars, just to name a few.
